Measuring social: a monthly review that isn't vanity
Follower counts flatter; they rarely inform. A monthly review built on engaged reach, audience fit, conversations, and changes.
Social reporting defaults to the numbers platforms make biggest: followers, impressions, likes. They're the easiest to screenshot and the hardest to act on — a follower count says nothing about whether the right people saw anything that mattered. A useful monthly review asks different questions: who did we reach, did they care, and what should next month's calendar change because of it?
Engaged reach beats raw reach
Impressions count screens your content crossed; engaged reach counts people who did anything at all. Track the share of reach that engaged, per format and topic. A post seen by two thousand and engaged by two hundred beats one seen by twenty thousand that nobody touched — and the pattern across posts tells you what your audience actually wants.
Audit who you're reaching, not just how many
For B2B especially: are new followers and engagers plausibly buyers? Sample them monthly. Growth composed of peers, students, and bots is a flattering dead end — the platform mix may need adjusting if the audience quality drifts.
Count conversations as a first-class metric
Comments with substance, DMs from plausible buyers, mentions on sales calls — the community signals — are where social shows up in pipeline before attribution ever sees it. Log them monthly, even roughly. A rough count of real conversations informs more than a precise count of likes.
Track clicks to the places that convert
Traffic from social to your service pages, profile link clicks, quote starts with social as a touchpoint — these connect the channel to outcomes without overclaiming. Expect modest numbers; social is an assist channel, and honest reporting says so.
End every review with decisions
The review's output isn't the deck; it's the changes: double down on the format that earned conversations, drop the series nobody engages, test the topic that overperformed. A metrics review that changes nothing next month was a slideshow — the same standard as any dashboard.
