Technical SEO for SaaS: the foundation most sites get wrong

Crawlability, indexing, rendering, and Core Web Vitals — the technical foundation a SaaS site needs before content can rank.

Most SaaS teams invest in content long before their site can support it. They publish, they build links, and rankings still stall — because the technical foundation quietly works against them. Technical SEO is not glamorous, but it decides whether every other investment compounds or leaks. This is the checklist we run before we touch a single keyword.

1. Make sure Google can crawl what matters

Crawl budget is rarely a problem for small sites, but wasted crawling is. Marketing pages get buried under faceted URLs, staging duplicates, and endless query-string variations. Point crawlers at what earns revenue and keep them out of what doesn't.

  • Audit your robots.txt and XML sitemap. The sitemap should list only canonical, indexable, 200-status URLs — nothing that redirects or 404s.
  • Kill duplicate paths. Trailing slashes, uppercase variants, and tracking parameters should resolve to one canonical URL.
  • Watch your internal links. Pages you never link to internally signal low priority. A strong topic-cluster structure fixes this by design.

2. Get indexing right before anything else

Ranking is impossible without indexing, yet “Crawled — currently not indexed” is the most common status we see in Search Console for SaaS blogs. It usually means thin or near-duplicate pages, or a canonical that points somewhere unexpected. Confirm that each important page is self-canonical, returns a clean 200, and carries a genuine reason to exist.

3. Treat Core Web Vitals as a ranking and conversion lever

Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift — measure how fast and stable a page feels. They are a lightweight ranking factor, but their real value is conversion: faster pages convert more trials. Prioritise image optimisation, a sensible caching layer, and shipping less JavaScript to the browser. Our web design and development work almost always starts here.

4. Don't let JavaScript hide your content

Many SaaS marketing sites are single-page apps that render content client-side. Google can render JavaScript, but it is slower, less reliable, and easy to get wrong. Server-render or statically generate anything you want indexed, and verify with the URL Inspection tool that Google sees the full text — not an empty shell.

5. Build architecture that scales with content

A flat, shallow structure stops scaling around fifty pages. Group content into clusters with a clear hub-and-spoke shape, keep important pages within three clicks of the homepage, and use breadcrumbs so both users and crawlers understand hierarchy. This is where technical SEO and content SEO meet.
